Carbon Credits refer to 1 tonne of GHG emissions that have been removed from the atmosphere or avoided from being emitted. Projects that want to generate carbon credits for their projects must follow specific methods, guidelines, and evaluation procedures in order to certify those emissions reductions are real and legitimate.

A primary requirement is that a project must demonstrate that their emissions reductions are different than the business-as-usual scenario. This is referred to as 'Additionality', meaning that the emissions reductions would not have occurred in the absence of a market for carbon credits.
